The Animal Hero Award will be presented every year to a person, group of people, or an animal based on the following criteria:

• The individual, or organization, has shown an outstanding act of compassion towards an animal or animals
• An animal has displayed an act of heroism towards people

In cooperation with the Newfoundland and Labrador Veterinary Medical Association, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Newfoundland and Labrador), one award will be given out each year to an individual or organization that has shown an outstanding act of compassion towards an animal or animals. It could also be given out to the owner of an animal that has displayed an act of heroism towards people.
